Laurel Schafer, PhD
Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, University of British Columbia

Dr. Schafer received her BSc from the University of Guelph, and her PhD from the University of Victoria. As an Associate Professor at the the University of British Columbia, the Schafer group specializes in organometallic catalysis for organic synthesis including reaction kinetics and mechanistic investigations. In particular, they have developed a new family of new early transition metal complexes for atom-economic catalysis to prepare amines, heterocycles, enynes and biodegradable polymers. These catalysts can be used in tandem sequential reactions for the efficient synthesis of biologically active small molecules. This work is pursued with a strong focus on providing outstanding and personalized training opportunities for undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral co-workers.

Dr. Schafer has received many notable awards and fellowships including the NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship University of California - Berkeley (T.D. Tilley, 1999-2001); NSERC University Faculty Award (2001); the Boehringer Ingelheim Young Investigator Award for Organic Synthesis (2004); A.P. Sloan Fellow (2007); Humboldt Research Fellow (2010); and Dean's Distinguished Scholar in 2010.
