Bioindustrial Innovation Centre

The Bioindustrial Innovation Centre (BIC) makes Canada a globally recognized leader in the efficient utilization of sustainable feedstocks, such as agricultural and forestry co-products, and in turning these renewable resources into energy and value-added chemicals for use in a wide range of commercial applications.

BIC has a major role in the translation of Southwestern Ontario's strengths in agriculture, chemicals, manufacturing, and automotive production into new, sustainable bioindustrial-based products and renewable energy. It provides laboratories and shared pilot facilities for gasification, pyrolysis, fermentation and other key technologies for conversion of agricultural and forestry co-products into fuels, chemicals, products and materials.

Sustainable Chemistry Alliance

The alliance focuses on areas where innovation in science and engineering can bring about major advances in sustainability. Sustainable chemistry is playing an important role in the development of solutions to the impacts of climate change, peak oil, energy security, the need for safe water, and the use of scarce natural resources. The increasing global demand for green and safer products offers the opportunity to create thousands of new jobs for Canadians.

The SCA serves emerging new industry in Canada. The alliance evolved from the former Ontario Chemistry Value Chain Initiative, which had been implementing a strategy designed to bridge the gap between biochemistry and synthetic chemistry. Our headquarters are located at the new Bioindustrial Innovation Centre at the Sarnia-Lambton Campus of the University of Western Ontario Research Park.
