KINGSTON, ON - Bayer Inc., the Canadian subsidiary of a global enterprise with core businesses in health care, crop science and innovative materials, has become the newest industrial sponsor of GreenCentre Canada, a national centre of excellence dedicated to developing environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional chemical and manufacturing products and practices.

The MaterialScience division of Bayer Inc. is part of the global Bayer MaterialScience business, one of the world's largest producers of polymers and high-performance plastics, with approximately 14,300 employees at 30 production sites around the world and 2010 sales of 10.2 billion Euros. As a sponsor, Bayer gains one-stop access to Canadian green chemistry discoveries submitted to GreenCentre. Bayer also takes an active part in assessing new technologies and providing development advice for promising discoveries accepted into the centre for commercialization.
With the addition of Bayer Inc., GreenCentre now has nine Canadian and international industrial sponsors. Other sponsors include Fielding Chemical Technologies Inc., Ford Motor Company, NexCycle Plastics Inc., NOVA Chemical Corporation, Polycorp Ltd., Pressure Chemical Co., Stepan Company, and Veolia Water Solutions and Technologies.
GreenCentre’s new, national model of commercialization continues to excite interest from across the country. To date GreenCentre has received more than 200 technology disclosures from 30 universities across Canada, as well as two government research labs and 13 companies.
Technologies being commercialized by GreenCentre include green surfactants, used in a wide range of consumer products and industrial processes; a green cement additive that shows potential to significantly strengthen concrete while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and green solvents with a wide array of uses in environmental cleanup and remediation, material recovery in recycling, and extraction of natural resources such as oil and gas.
