KINGSTON, ON -- A globally respected chemist and educator who is a driving force behind the ‘greening’ of the chemical industry will be a keynote speaker at GreenCentre Canada’s Sustainable Chemistry Summit later this year.
GreenCentre Canada is proud to welcome Dr. John C. Warner, a founding father of the green chemistry movement, to the three-day gathering, which takes place Sept. 16-17 in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
“Dr. Warner has profoundly influenced both the chemical industry and the academic research community,” says Dr. Rui Resendes, Executive Director of GreenCentre Canada. “His success in establishing a green mindset among chemical manufacturers while helping to develop the next generation of green chemists is an inspiration to all of us. We are honoured to have him as our guest.”
Industrial chemist, inventor, university professor and widely published author, Dr. Warner developed, with Paul Anastas of Yale University, the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry, a radical new model for chemical innovation that championed green, preventive approaches, rather than end-of-pipe cleanup. He also co-authored, with Dr. Anastas, Green Chemistry: Theory and Practice, today considered the foundational textbook of the green chemistry movement.
Dr. Warner, who is also recognized as one of the world’s leading experts in designing safer chemical products and processes, is founder, President and Chief Technology Officer of the Warner Babcock Institute for Green Chemistry of Wilmington, MA, offering green chemistry expertise and technologies to industry and the marketplace.
A strong believer in science literacy and public outreach, he is co-founder and President of Beyond Benign, a not-for-profit organization that promotes sustainable science to communities through educational tools, opportunities and partnerships.
Dr. Warner has received numerous awards for his work, including the 2004 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Mentoring, and the Council of Science Society President’s 2008 Leadership award. He was also named by ICIS, the global chemical market intelligence firm, as one of the most influential people impacting the global chemical industries in 2008.
