The most competitive industries are those able to look ahead and anticipate global trends and opportunities. However, in recent years the Canadian chemical industry has increasingly been shifting focus and resources to more immediate objectives at the expense of truly foundational R&D. University research labs can be the source of innovative solutions and breakthrough developments for industry. Until now, however, there has been no effective channel to connect the two.
GreenCentre Canada’s Chemical Industry Mobilization Program now links industry and academic researchers. Through CIMP, industry sponsors become collaborators in assessing and developing promising Green Chemistry technologies. At the same time, the centre will deepen its understanding of specific industry problems and opportunities -- knowledge that will inform the criteria for identifying and selecting early-stage technologies for development. The nature of the selection process will be communicated across Canada’s academic community as a means of raising awareness of the opportunity to undertake problem- and opportunity-specific fundamental research programs.
