Green Admixtures for Cements

Inventor: Dr. Lionel Catalan & Dr. Stephen Kinrade
Institution: Lakehead University

This technology provides a novel class of cement additive that significantly increases the strength of concrete. First-generation additives provide up to 40% increases in concrete strength (versus control cements without additive). These additives reduce the amount of Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) required to achieve the same compressive strength. Because OPC production is a major source of CO2 (5-7% of all CO2 production worldwide), a technology that can reduce OPC use on this level would have the potential to dramatically decrease CO2 emissions, resulting in both environmental and fiscal benefits. The additives have potential applications in ready-mix concrete, mortars, geopolymer concretes and other OPC-containing construction products.

GreenCentre has shown proof of concept in a variety of test formulations suitable for ready-mix and low/no slump concrete. Two patent applications with broad coverage have been filed. Data packages showing wet concrete properties, compressive strength over time, and additional data are available under a Confidential Disclosure Agreement. We are currently looking for a licensee and/or development partner to validate and/or market and distribute this platform technology in various concrete markets globally.
