Switchable Solvents and Surfactants

Inventor: Dr. Philip Jessop
Institution: Queen's University

Solvent and surfactants are ubiquitous throughout chemical and materials manufacturing. While their use facilitate a myriad of chemical transformations, their presence in the final commercial or consumer product is neither environmental nor economically desirable. For this reason, these compounds must be removed, often through the employment of high energy separation processes (e.g. high temperature distillation).

GreenCentre Canada is currently developing a suite of switchable reagents that can replace traditional organic solvents and surfactants. Building on these platform technologies, we have developed green process technologies for plastics recycling, soil remediation and seed oil extraction.

These technologies have gone on to form the basis of a new technology company, Switchable Solutions Inc.
